"Consider the connection of things..." John Woolman

"True godliness don't turn men out of the World, but enables them to live better in it, and excites their endeavors to mend it." William Penn

Wilmington College was founded in 1870 by the Friends (Quakers) who became Wilmington Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. Over the years, it has been the hope of these Friends that the College would serve as an educational institution which seeks to bring people to the Teacher in themselves and to equip them to follow the leadings of that Teacher in the world around them.

Wilmington College has always welcomed students, faculty, and staff of any faith (or none) into this mission.

Our central founding purpose leads to an informal covenant to help one another

• To become more inner-directed, less governed by the opinions of others, less motivated by narrow self-interest;
• To become more aware of the larger world, more understanding of and sympathetic to people from other countries and cultures;
• To understand our own ethical and religious traditions and the ethical and religious traditions of others;
• To understand and appreciate community and to be able to take part effectively in the kind of community dialogue and decision-making which brings people together instead of driving them apart;
• To understand causal connections in the world in which we live, as those connections are understood by the academic disciplines and through cross-disciplinary study;
• To develop concern and a sense of responsibility about matters of importance, without feeling overwhelmed by them;
• To understand alternatives to violence and to develop skills in peace-making and dialogue.
Scholarships for Quaker students
On account of our long and continuing affiliation with the Religious Society of Friends, Wilmington College maintains two scholarship programs to assist and encourage members of the Religious Society of Friends to attend Wilmington.
